In the corner of Robusti: Ilari Kujala

A top-class athlete has joined the Robusti team – professional boxer Ilari Kujala. Kujala is known for his tough attitude, determination and impressive career development in the ring. He is one of Finland's most promising boxers, who is firmly aiming for the top of Europe.

Kujala fights in the middleweight division and has won all of his professional fights to date – with a record of 9–0 (3 knockouts). He is originally from Perho and currently lives in Kirkkonummi. Kujala is coached by former European champion and respected Finnish boxing legend Amin Asikainen.

We asked Ilari about his career, everyday life, and what it really takes to succeed in the professional world.

How did your sports career begin and how did you end up in boxing?

When I was younger, I played all kinds of ball games and yard games with my friends. I got into boxing through my older brother. I first got the hang of it from my brother, who had started boxing earlier – so I had to start training myself. After hand injuries and the corona period, I took a break from amateur boxing, but in 2022 I got an offer to move to the professional ring and the spark was lit again.

What are your biggest achievements in the ring so far?

In the amateur style, I won two Finnish championships and made it to the top five in the Olympic qualifiers, and there were also some tough individual victories over medalists in prestigious competitions. As a professional, I currently have a clean 9-0-0 (3 KO) record.

What are your goals for the coming years as a boxer?

The goal for the coming years is to get on the European list and thus into the European Championship – and win it.

What does holistic well-being mean to you as an athlete?

Overall well-being is important so that the body and mind can cope and develop.

What is your typical training day like in preparation for a match?

When preparing for a match, I train 2–3 times a day, pay attention to healthy eating, and try to rest and recover during the hard training period.

How does your diet and nutrition support training and recovery?

During a hard training season, I eat a balanced diet and focus on getting enough energy – without forgetting refueling and snack days.

What is the importance of recovery and rest for your performance?

Of course, that's very important. I can't train hard enough if I don't recover. Getting enough rest also ensures that I'm at my best in the ring.

Do you use any supplements that you find helpful?

I use a multivitamin and vitamin D supplement, magnesium, and protein supplement when needed.

Do you have a motivational quote or thought that carries you forward during tough times?

Quote from a coach: Sweat saves blood.

Ilari Kujala's journey is just beginning, but the direction is clear. Robust is proud to support his career towards the top of Europe and the world – one step at a time.
